Gary O
Roush
Jun 28, 1940 — Oct 4, 2026
Mason
Gary Owen Roush (86), of Mason, West Virginia, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and loved ones on Sunday, October 4, 2026.
He was a 1958 graduate of Wahama High School and married Mary Mae Roush in 1961. He spent his early career working with his father and brothers at G.O. Roush & Sons. He estimated that he built over 250 homes and buildings in his lifetime. He finished his last house at 85 years old.
In 1973, Gary and his brothers purchased Riverside Golf Club. What began as a nine-hole course soon became a much larger family undertaking. In 1975, the brothers began the ambitious project of expanding Riverside to an 18-hole championship course. Over the years, Gary and his family continued to develop the course, making Riverside not simply a place to play golf, but a gathering place for generations of families, golfers, schools, and friends. Following the passing of his wife, Mary, in 1992, Gary took sole ownership of Riverside Golf Club.
Gary and his sons then set out to build the “new clubhouse” which opened in 2001, fulfilling Mary’s dream.
His proudest achievement wasn't building a successful business but building a legacy that provided a livelihood for his sons, family, and community.
In 2004, Gary married his wife Teresa, with whom he shared the remainder of his life with at their home in Mason.
Gary took his passion for the game of golf beyond Mason County. He served the West Virginia Golf Association for over 30 years as an Executive Committee Member and Head of Course Rating. He was the West Virginia representative for the United States Golf Association Public Links Tournament for 15 years. He also was a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America for 50 years and served as President of the West Virginia Golf Course Superintendents Association.
He was awarded the WVGA England Award in 2017 and in 2025, he was inducted into the Wahama Athletic Hall of Fame honoring his contributions as a booster.
He is survived by his wife, Teresa; his sons, Ty (Drenda) Roush and Mitchell (Erin) Roush; his grandchildren, Trenton (Paige) Roush, Carrie (Brandon) Hankinson, Mary Grace Roush, and Grant Roush; his step-grandchild, Jerod (Beckie) Cook; his great-grandchildren, Ariat, Cierra, Jameson, Chrystian, Liam, and Gire; and his brother, Eldon (Barbara) Roush, as well as his sisters-in-law, Louise Roush and Susannah Lewis.
He is also survived by his stepchildren, Patty (Bruce) Bumgardner, John (Tammy) Cremeans, Peggy (Darrin) Perkins, Tammy (Rod) Harris, and Jay (Sara) Cremeans and their children and grandchildren.
He is proceeded in death by his wife Mary Mae, his parents Grant and Thelma Roush, and brothers, Donald, Nelson, Robert, Glenn, and RJ.
His greatest legacy may be seen every day at Riverside Golf Club, but his true contribution to the world is the lessons and memories that he left with his family, friends, employees and neighbors.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Mary Roush Memorial Scholarship. Donations can be sent to 1661 Adamsville Road, Mason, WV 25260 (304)-773-5354 Attn: Mary Roush Memorial Scholarship
