He was born on October 7, 1935 in Yukon, West Virginia to the late Berlin and Elizabeth (Hagerman) Smith and was raised in McDowell County, West Virginia by Berlin and step-mother Celia (Brown) Smith. As a young man, he left West Virginia for adventure and experience of working in the shipyards of Buffalo, NY. Later he joined the Navy where he sailed all over the world, traveled up and down the eastern United States, and lived in the nation’s Capital of Washington, D.C. while on assignment.

He worked as a skilled Electrician until his retirement in 2003. As a widower, he later relocated to South Chesterfield, Virginia and married Nada Smith. He enjoyed retirement by spending time with family, volunteering and helping to operate a local food bank, spending time outdoors, and helping others. He was an avid fisherman, man of God, proud veteran, and a role model for anyone needing a guiding light on how to treat others. He often said that he was lucky enough to have the two best wives and the greatest family that anyone could ever ask for. He felt he had been truly blessed.
He is proceeded in death by his late wife of 44 years, Virginia M. (Hurd) Smith; his late wife of 19 years, Nada L. (Scott) Smith; and daughter-in-law Diane M. Smith.
