Jerald David
Frye
Jul 23, 1959 — May 19, 2025
On May 19, 2025, the world lost one of its finest troublemakers and best storytellers. Jerald David Frye, 65, of New Haven, WV, passed peacefully at St. Mary's Hospital, no doubt with a smirk on his face and a smart remark ready for the next person to walk in.
Jerry was the kind of man who could make a stranger feel like an old friend in under five minutes — and then lovingly roast them like they'd known each other for years. He had a sharp tongue, a big heart, and a sense of humor that could make a quiet room erupt into laughter, whether folks were ready or not.
He was preceded in death by his loving mother, Belva Frye of Hartford, WV; his brother Robert Crouse, brother-in-law Jack Propp, and lifelong friend George Brown— all of whom we imagine greeted him at the gates with open arms and maybe a little sarcasm of their own.
Jerry's pride and joy was his family. He leaves behind his daughter Sasha Frye, who inherited his strong will and sense of humor (for better or worse), and his grandchildren: Jazlyn, Janessa, and Justice Frye — who could always count on "Pappy paw" for laughs, snacks, stories, and probably a little harmless mischief. His grandkids were his heart, and he talked about them to anyone who would listen — and plenty who didn't ask.
He is also survived by his sisters Bettie Propp, and Connie (Butch) Gibbs of Hartford, WV, who always had his back — even when he didn't deserve it. His nieces and nephews — Karen Gibbs, Dale and Steven Gibbs, and Bobbi (Eddie) Shamblin — all knew that Uncle Jerry could be counted on for a good story, laugh, or sarcastic remark. Whether they wanted to hear it or not.
Jerry was never happier than when he was hanging out with his tight-knit circle of friends, especially His closest Friend/ brother by choice Phil (Robynn)Serevicz — his partner in crime and the only man who could keep up with his antics. The two of them were a local legend — known for going on wild "adventures," sharing endless inside jokes, Irritating and "humiliating people" especially Robynn, for fun (with love of course). He also shared many laughs and long talks at home with his buddy Justin Arnold and enjoyed every moment spent, at every ball game cheering for and also humiliating his adopted nephews Demetrius and Antonio Serevicz.
He loved the little things in life: sitting out front with a cold drink, people-watching at the Marathon, poking fun at just about everyone, and making memories with those he loved. He could turn even the most ordinary day into something worth talking about.
Jerry lived life on his own terms — loud, loving, and unapologetically himself. He didn't care what people thought, unless you were someone he loved — in which case he'd go to the ends of the earth for you, even if he grumbled about it the whole way.
His absence leaves a loud, sarcastic, story-filled hole in our hearts. But if Jerry taught us anything, it's that life is meant to be lived fully, laughed at often, and never taken too seriously.
