Ray Thomas VanMeter Sr., 90, of Mason, WV, passed away September 14, 2023, at Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehab, Pt. Pleasant, WV, following an extended illness.

He was born September 29, 1932, in West Columbia, WV, a son of the late Edward and Clara Mae (Bass) VanMeter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Delores A. VanMeter; brothers, Jesse (Bill) VanMeter, Howard (Kitten) VanMeter, Harold (Hunk) VanMeter, Charles (Dude) VanMeter, William (Flick) VanMeter, Paul (Gene) VanMeter; sisters, Margaret (Maggie) Barker, Eunice (Sis) Halscott, Myrtle (Norie) VanMeter, and Marie Barnes.

Ray was a United States Army Veteran and a Coalminer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, picking berries and hunting ginseng. Ray attended Fathers House Church in Hartford and was a lifetime member of the Stewart Johnson V.F.W. Post 9926, Mason, WV.

Survivors include his son, Ray VanMeter Jr. and his wife Evelyn of Clifton, WV; grandchildren, Deann Russell of New Haven, Chris VanMeter of Mason; great granddaughter, Arielle Russell of Charleston; great-great granddaughters, Raegan Harper of Charleston and Scarlett Harper of Charleston.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m., Sunday, September 17, 2023, at Graham Baptist Church Cemetery, New Haven, WV, with Pastor Leland VanMeter officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Stewart Johnson V.F.W. Post 9926, Mason, WV, American Legion Post 140, New Haven, WV, and American Legion Post 0039, Pomeroy, OH.
